Takamaka Rum partners with Ecospirits

Trois Frères Distillery, producer of Takamaka Rum, is working with sustainable packaging creator Ecospirits to bring a closed-loop spirits distribution system to the Seychelles.

Ecospirits aims to reduce packaging waste in the spirits supply chain through the use of returnable ‘Ecototes’ instead of glass bottles.

Takamaka expects to eliminate 91.4% of the carbon emissions associated with its glass bottle supply by implementing the Ecospirits system, which will operate out of Ecoplant No.28, a containerised spirits processing facility on the island of Mahé.

Through the partnership, the Seychelles will become the 27th market to implement Ecospirits technology, and the second market to join the Ecospirits Ocean Program, which features limited edition Ecototes. Every Ocean Conservation Edition Ecotote purchased by a partner venue will fund the removal of one kilogram of waste from protected beaches and waters.

“The Seychelles as a small island nation has taken amazing strides to protect and sustain the archipelago’s ecosystems,” said Richard D’Offay, managing director of Takamaka, who founded the brand with his brother Bernard 20 years ago.

“Our role as a local business must be to support those ideals, and the introduction of Ecospirits, minimising single-use glass while directly contributing to the Ocean Project, we believe is the type of action that delivers on those goals.”

In January, Ecospirits teamed up with Stranger & Sons Gin to launch in India.

Earlier this month, Pernod Ricard announced it would offer many of its brands in an Ecotote format.
