Calvados brand Avallen has entered the Costa Rican market through a distribution deal with importer Habla Bebedias.

Avallen is coming to Costa Rica

Avallen said its move into Costa Rica is a ‘natural fit’ thanks to the country’s eco-friendly efforts. More than 98% of energy used in the nation comes from renewable resources, and the government has implemented a plan that aims to decarbonise the Costa Rican economy by 2050.

Since it was founded in 2019, Avallen has emphasised sustainability as a core aspect of its brand.

It is made with just apples and water, and its production methods remove 2.73kg of carbon dioxide equivalent per bottle, without offsetting.

Steph Jordan, who co-founded Avallen with Tim Etherington-Judge, called the distribution deal “a monumental step” for the brand.

“Our mission here at Avallen is to do as much as we can to tackle the climate emergency, by creating a planet positive world where by we can all continue to enjoy delicious tasting tipples without leaving the planet with a hangover,” she said.

“We’re delighted to be recognised by the leading sustainable country in the world and we look forward to working with our likeminded partners and learning even more about what we can do to further our efforts in the fight against the climate crisis. We can’t wait for the people of Costa Rica to get sipping Avallen and joining us on our mission.”

Earlier this year, Avallen’s sustainability credentials led to the brand becoming B Corp certified.

Javier Abreu, commercial and operations manager at Habla Bebidas, said: “We really admire the commitment that Avallen takes in helping to make the planet more sustainable.

“Their values and entire ethos perfectly match Costa Rica’s zero-carbon ambitions so it made absolute sense that we became collaborators.”
