Luxco debuts Port-finished Rebel Bourbon

Kentucky’s Lux Row Distillers has unveiled a limited edition Rebel Bourbon finished in tawny Port barrels, available exclusively outside of the US.

The Luxco-owned distillery has created 6,000 bottles of the Bourbon as part of its Special Finish Series.

Every year, the Special Finish Series releases a whiskey finished for six months in a different cask. In 2019, the brand unveiled a French Oak Finish and 2020 saw the launch of a Cognac cask-finished bottling.

The producer said both the limited edition expressions witnessed ‘high demand’ and sold out quickly.

This year’s bottling offers sweetness, nuttiness and earthy notes on the nose, whilst the palate brings hints of toffee, mocha, dried citrus, dark red fruits and spices.

John Rempe, master distiller and blender at Lux Row Distillers, said: “The Tawny Port flavours pair really well with Rebel Bourbon’s vanilla, oak and caramel profile.

“It’s a winning combination that creates a distinct, depth of rich flavours that’s unlike anything else in the Rebel family, whilst still retaining the Kentucky straight Bourbon’s remarkably smooth finish.

“The secondary finishing elevates the original four-year ageing of Rebel in new charred white oak barrels, taking it to a different level that more years in the rackhouse wouldn’t achieve.”

Rebel Bourbon Tawny Port Finish (45% ABV) will officially launch at Bar Convent Berlin (BCB) in October before being released globally from 1 November, apart from the US. Distribution of the product will focus on the UK and Germany, the brand’s ‘high-demand’ markets.

Greg Mefford, international sales director at Luxco, the owner of Lux Row Distillers, added: “The Rebel Bourbon Special Finish series will be available internationally, outside of the US.

“Its release celebrates the growing loyalty of Rebel fans around the world, particularly those throughout the UK and Europe, who’ve continued to support the brand and snap up new releases such as Rebel 100, despite the economic impact of trade tariffs.

“With this in mind, we’re launching Rebel Tawny Port at BCB in Berlin and will prioritise distribution in popular European markets.”

The Bourbon will have a RRP of £39 (US$53) per 700ml bottle.

In April 2021, third-party spirits producer MGP Ingredients completed its acquisition of American whiskey maker Luxco in a deal valued at US$475 million.
