Aber Falls has released a new single malt whisky

In May this year, Aber Falls released its inaugural single malt whisky, the first to be distilled in North Wales for more than a century.

The distillery’s managing director James Wright said the inaugural release, which was limited to 2,000 bottles, sold out in 40 minutes.

The Halewood-owned distillery has now unveiled the 2021 bottling, which was distilled in a mix of copper pot and stainless steel stills. It is matured in a combination of oloroso Sherry casks, PX Sherry casks, Bourbon casks and virgin oak casks.

The single malt offers a nose of sweet fruits with a hint of clove, while the palate is ‘rich and full-bodied’, with sweet sherry notes, dark chocolate and espresso.

Dr Kirstie McCallum, master blender at Aber Falls, said: “The perfect whisky is made up of exceptional ingredients, ideal conditions and well considered casks made of top-quality wood. In particular, the two Sherry casks used for this single malt have provided a very enjoyable flavour that we’re incredibly proud of.”

The three-year-old whisky is made using 100% Welsh malted barley and rock-filtered water from the distillery’s waterfall. It is matured in a traditional dunnage warehouse along the Menai Straits, before being bottled on site at the distillery.

The 2021 Aber Falls single malt has an RRP of £26 (US$36) per 700ml. It is available in Tesco stores across Wales and online retailer Master of Malt. It will also be available across the on-trade, and can be purchased online at aberfallsdistillery.com.
