Lakes Distillery debuts cake-inspired whisky

The Lakes Distillery has created a patisserie-influenced single malt, part of its Whiskymaker’s Editions series, exclusively for luxury retailer Harvey Nichols.

The new expression, called Le Goûter, is inspired by the sensory experience of a ‘childhood cake shop excursion’ in Paris.

The Lakes whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi crafted the whisky, and the producer commissioned artist Eili-Kaija Kuusniemi to illustrate its label.

Le Goûter is the second launch in The Whiskymaker’s Editions range, following the release of a Colheita Port-cask finished single malt last September. Each bottling in the collection departs from the distillery’s Sherry-forward style to allow for ‘creative freedom’ in its whisky production.

“The Whiskymaker’s Editions conjure up precious memories, create opportunities to generate new ones, and push boundaries through the art of whisky,” said Gandhi.

“Like every Le Goûter moment, presentation is everything. That is why we teamed up with artist Eili-Kaija Kuusniemi to reflect the story behind the whisky in luscious watercolours and a fresh and free-spirited style.”

In keeping with the bottling’s patisserie theme, the whisky is said to offer notes of crème anglaise and jasmine, plus a touch of pear, citrus zest and freshly baked madeleines.

It is available to purchase at Harvey Nichols stores in Knightsbridge, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol and Edinburgh, as well as through harveynichols.com, priced at RRP £99.50 (US$140).

In May, The Lakes said it anticipated production growth of 70% for its single malts in the coming year.
