Elixir Distillers received planning permission to build a new distillery on Islay in December 2020.

Crawford has worked for Diageo for 14 years, most recently holding the position of project implementation manager for the revival of Port Ellen.

She will join Elixir Distillers this summer when construction work of the new distillery is expected to begin.

Sukhinder Singh, co-founder of Elixir Distillers, said: “Having grown up on Islay, attending school a stone’s throw from our distillery site, Georgie’s love for the island and all its distilleries is unrivalled.

“She not only shares our passion for Islay whisky, but also our vision for the future and I know that she will bring both exceptional expertise and a fresh approach to a new Islay distillery.”

Crawford began her career in Scotch whisky at The Vaults in Edinburgh with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in 2002.

Since then, Crawford has worked for brands including Talisker, Glen Ord and Teaninich, before taking up the role with Lagavulin.

Crawford added: “I have been friends with Sukhinder and Ollie [Chilton, Elixir Distillers’ head blender] for a long time and was always keen to hear about their plans for the new distillery build here on Islay.

“It is an honour to be asked to join their team and to help them take their ideas from plans to reality.”

Once completed, the Elixir Distillers Islay site will feature floor maltings capable of supplying more than 50% of the full one million litres-per-annum capacity of the distillery, on-site housing, a visitor centre and a multi-purpose educational facility.
