Halewood to open Bristol rum distillery and bar

Dead Man’s Fingers Spiced Rum producer Halewood Wines & Spirits is set to open a new rum distillery and bar in Bristol, UK.

The Bristol & Bath Rum Distillery will be housed in a former Jamie’s Italian restaurant in Park Street. It will open at the end of this month.

The 7,500 sq ft venue will house a 500-litre double retort rum still, traditionally used by Caribbean distillers, to make its Dead Man’s Fingers Spiced Rum brand, which originated from the Rum & Crab Shack in St Ives, Cornwall.

The rum, which will be distilled at both the Rum & Crab Shack and the Bristol & Bath Rum Distillery, will be shipped from Bristol across the UK and overseas. The Bristol distillery will also house a 200-litre gin still.

In addition, the distillery will run a rum school, allowing visitors to create their own spiced rum in small copper stills. Meanwhile, the distillery’s bar will stock more than 150 different rums from more than 50 different origins.

“Bristol has a rich rum heritage and one of the UK’s most vibrant food and drink scenes,” said Chris Hotson, general manager of the Bristol & Bath Rum Distillery.

“It was a natural choice for Halewood’s new bar and rum distillery – it’s an exciting place to be and we’re looking forward to welcoming locals and visitors from across the UK and further afield to enjoy immersive experiences where they can learn more about provenance-led craft rums.”

Hotson also said Dead Man’s Fingers is “disrupting the rum category” and “striking a chord with people looking to discover adventurous flavours”.

This summer, the brand launched an expression infused with natural hemp and CBD (cannabidiol), extracted from the cannabis plant. Halewood acquired the rum in 2018.

Hotson added: “The new distillery will make Dead Man’s Fingers more accessible, allowing visitors to distil rum themselves and learn about rums from around the world, which are also defined by fine ingredients, flavours and distilling methods.

“This fits perfectly with Bristol’s pioneering and eclectic appreciation of food and drink.”

Halewood also owns the Bajan rum brand Sixty Six. The group operates a number of distilleries across the UK, including the Aber Falls Distillery in North Wales, City of London Distillery and the new Liverpool Gin Distillery.

The group is set to open a microdistillery for the revived John Crabbie whisky brand in Edinburgh later this year.
