Bacardi turns used plastic straws into vinyl records

Puerto Rican rum brand Bacardi has unveiled a limited edition vinyl record made from used straws that were collected from bars across the US.

Bacardi will collect used straws and turn them into vinyl records

Bacardi Rum and environmental charity Lonely Whale have partnered with 55 bars across the US to collect used straws that will be turned into multicoloured vinyl records.

The records will be pressed with Make it Hot by Major Lazer and Anitta, which was released earlier this year as part of Bacardi’s Pass the Beat campaign.

The up-cycled vinyl records will be showcased at this weekend’s Life is Beautiful music festival in Las Vegas, where Bacardi will take over the Art Motel transforming it into a “rum paradise”. The motel will also showcase Lonely Whale’s The Future Doesn’t Suck campaign.

Following Life Is Beautiful, Bacardi and Lonely Whale will distribute straw collection containers.

Once enough straws have been collected, the records will be pressed and will be available to purchase from 3 December at lonelywhale.com. All of the proceeds from the Make It Hot vinyl will go to the charity.

Bacardi first partnered with Lonely Whale in 2018 and they have since called on tech creators to remove the plastic straw emoji.

Earlier this month, Bacardi recruited five bartenders from around the world to star in a new video based around the “rhythm of cocktail-making”.
