Spirit Master: Maison La Mauny – Acacia

Ahead of the ‘real’ National Mai Tai Day on Friday (30 August), we present an acclaimed agricole expression from the island of Martinique.

Maison La Mauny – Acacia grabbed a Master medal in the rum blind-tasting competition

Every week, SB celebrates some of the top scoring Master medallists from The Global Spirits Masters blind-tasting competitions as part of our Spirit Masters series.

According to tropical-themed bar chain Trader Vic’s, Victor J Bergeron claimed to have invented iconic Tiki cocktail the Mai Tai in 1944 at his venue, Trader Vic’s, in Oakland, California.

Trader Vic’s original Mai Tai was created on 30 August using Martinique rum, Jamaican rum, Cointreau, lime juice, and orgeat syrup.

The agricole was one of eight rums to gain a Master medal

National Mai Tai Day has been celebrated annually on 30 June according to various news sources, but Trader Vic’s claims the ‘real’ Mai Tai Day is 30 August.

To mark the occasion, we put the spotlight on Maison La Mauny – Acacia, produced at the La Mauny distillery in Martinique.

The expression stormed to success in The Rum & Cachaça Masters 2019 as one of only eight rums to grab the Master accolade.

The blind-tasting competition took place at The Rum Kitchen Carnaby in London in February, and saw the breadth of the category come under scrutiny from four judging panels.

In the overproof rum subcategory, the “refined and elegant” Maison La Mauny – Acacia secured a Master medal after impressing with its “clean palate, reminiscent of varnished oak”.

The brand could soon be under the ownership of Wild Turkey owner Campari Group, which recently entered into “exclusive negotiations” with the Chevrillon Group to buy French firm Rhumantilles SAS, owner of Trois Rivières and Maison La Mauny agricole rum brands.
