Spirit Master: Courvoisier XO

This Sunday (14 July) marks Bastille Day, the national day of France. Here, we celebrate the occasion with an award-winning XO from one of the world’s biggest Cognac brands.

Courvoisier XO grabbed a Master medal in the XO – Ultra Premium flight

Every week, SB celebrates some of the top-scoring Master medallists from The Global Spirits Masters blind-tasting competition as part of its Spirit Masters series.

In honour of Bastille Day, we put the spotlight on a quintessentially French spirit: Cognac.

The Cognac Masters 2019 bestowed four Master medals upon top-quality expressions

During our Cognac Masters competition, Cognac house Courvoisier grabbed two Masters for its Courvoisier XO and Courvoisier Napoleon. In total, the competition awarded four Masters, 11 Golds and six Silver medals.

In the XO – Ultra Premium round, judges said Courvoisier XO was a clear example of “what you get when you pay more for age and depth”, with “harsh alcohol turning into complexity, creating something quite special”.

Despite its rich rancio character, the Cognac managed to maintain its “vibrancy and freshness”.

The 40% abv Cognac contains long-aged eaux-de-vie from grande and petite Champagne.

Courvoisier’s history stretches back to the early 19th century. Since 2014, the brand has been under the ownership of Maker’s Mark producer Beam Suntory.

According to 2019 Brand Champions data, Courvoisier is the fourth best-selling Cognac in the world, selling 1.4 million nine-litre cases in 2018.
