Portobello Road to launch low-abv Temperance

London-based Portobello Road Gin has entered the low-alcohol category with the launch of a 4.2% abv ‘spirit’, called Temperance.

Portobello Road’s Temperance is bottled at 4.2% abv

Temperance has been created for consumers “who are looking to moderate their intake of alcohol yet don’t want to compromise on flavour”.

Temperance, which means moderation, has been distilled using the same nine botanicals as Portobello Road’s London Dry and Navy Strength offerings.

To create Temperance, Portobello Road founder Jake F. Burger developed “bespoke” techniques and added extra ingredients, such as naturally high-mineral-content water, botanical hydrosols and “one or two secret ingredients”.

The resulting liquid is described as “instantly weighty, with viscosity and a pleasant acidic sharpness” on the palate.

Notes of citrus, floral, winter spice appear on the nose, leading to juniper and pepper.

Temperance is recommended served as an alternative to gin or vodka in mixed drinks and low-alcohol cocktails such as Negronis and Tom Collins. It can be served with tonic water and garnished with a twist of pink grapefruit.

A 50ml serving of Temperance with 200ml tonic water carries an abv of 0.8%, while a classic Negroni made with Temperance contains 1.1 units.

“With the mindful drinking movement on the rise, we wanted to create a high quality low-abv ‘spirit’ for discerning drinkers and tastemakers,” said Burger.

“Everything we do here at Portobello Road Gin is inspired by gin’s rich heritage and while we would never call Temperance a gin – as it is below 37.5% – it was important to us that the ‘spirit’ retained the flavour and texture of a classic gin.

“The same level of craftsmanship has gone into creating Temperance ‘spirit’ as our high-abv gins and at the forefront of the development process was how bartenders would be working with the product.

“We anticipate Temperance being used as the only base spirit in long very-low-alcohol drinks, and also as an ingredient in drinks using multiple spirits where bartenders are looking to lower the overall abv.”

Temperance is available to order for the on- and off-trade from mid-July with an RRP of £23 (US$29). The product is being distributed through Mangrove.
