Etherington-Judge to run 42 marathons in 42 days

Tim Etherington-Judge, founder of not-for-profit social enterprise Healthy Hospo, is aiming to raise £42,000 (US$54,000) for industry charity The Benevolent by running 42 marathons in 42 days after turning 42 years old.

Tim Etherington-Judge, left, will run 42 marathons in 42 days later this year

Etherington-Judge will run his first marathon at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans in July, then head to New York and Amsterdam, before finishing in London on 30 August.

One marathon is 42 kilometres long, meaning by the time he finishes, Etherington-Judge will have covered a total of distance of 1,764km, which equates to approximately 2.3 million steps.

Etherington-Judge said he sought a “deep personal challenge” as he turned 42 years old. By running a series of marathons, he hopes to raise awareness of mental health issues in the hospitality industry as well as substantial amount of money for charity.

“Awareness of the problems of mental health within our industry is growing, but we still have huge progress to make, not only in breaking down the stigma related to mental health, but also in building strategies and systems to help people get the support they need,” said Etherington-Judge.

“My hope is that this challenge will raise awareness, motivate people to donate to an amazing charity and inspire people to get involved in building a healthier, happier hospitality industry.”

The former global brand ambassador for Bulleit Bourbon, Etherington-Judge has spoken publicly about his battle with depression after suffering a severe mental breakdown in 2016.

He founded Healthy Hospo last year as a multifaceted project to promote health and wellness in the hospitality industry.

Next week, Healthy Hospo will celebrate its first anniversary with a day of wellness talks and workshops in London.
