US producer Caledonia Spirits has broken ground on a new US$9 million distillery in Montpelier, Vermont, which is expected to open next year.

The gin and vodka maker will open a 26,000-square-foot distillery, tasting room and visitor centre on Gin Lane in Montpelier. The distillery is expected to open in May 2019.

The site will also house a venue for community engagement, and will provide bee and pollinator education, distillation history and cocktail education. A public bike path will also be constructed in front of the riverside distillery.

Montpelier City Council approved a US$460,000 development agreement in May 2017 for several infrastructure improvements prior to work commencing on the distillery.

The new site will increase Caledonia Spirits’s total production capacity to more than 200,000 cases.

The company produces a range of spirits under its Barr Hill brand, which includes Barr Hill Gin, Barr Hill Vodka and Tom Cat Gin.

“The popularity of our brand begins with our farmers and distillers attention to quality,” said Ryan Christiansen, Caledonia Spirits president and head distiller.

“The added capacity allows our team to bring more Barr Hill to market, while providing space to create and share new products with the community as we cultivate stronger relationships with our area farmers.

“This is an investment in Vermont. We can see the trend, and feel the momentum. If we’re going to keep up, we need more space.”
