‘Field-to-glass’ brandy distillery to open

Boston-based private firm Drumlin Field Ventures has received planning permission to build a ‘field-to-glass’ brandy distillery in Columbia County, New York.

The new distillery will create an “ultra-premium New York State brandy”

The distillery and tasting room will be located on a 182-acre property in Claverack, Columbia County.

Drumlin Field Ventures will invest more than US$6.3 million in property, construction, equipment and design costs.

The distillery will produce apple and grape brandies using fruit from trees and vines grown on the property.

It will use “traditional French methods complemented by American technology and innovation”.

Grapes and apples grown on the premises will be crushed, fermented into wine and cider, then distilled and aged to produce an “ultra-premium New York State brandy”.

Drumlin Field plans to contract local and regional growers to provide the fruit for the initial distilling operations while the company’s orchards and vineyards mature.

The project, which was recently approved by the Town of Claverack Planning Board, is expected to begin construction this summer. Initial orchard and vine planting is scheduled for 2019. The project is expected to create 25 jobs.

Drumlin Field president John Frishkopf, said: “We chose a site which falls within an agricultural district and qualifies as a start-up farm, and we were happy to find so much support for agribusiness and craft spirits production in New York state.

“The local climate and conditions are ideal for growing fruit for brandy production, and the Claverack property provides a stunning location for the tasting room.”
