Revolution Bars joins anti-plastic straw pledge

British chain Revolution Bars has banned the use of plastic straws across its 73 venues as part of its new sustainability campaign.

Revolution Bars has removed plastic straws from its venues

Revolution and Revolución de Cuba will be pushing their respective #TheFinalStraw and #NoStrawPorFavor initiatives across all venues, ending their 30-million plastic straw order made every year.

Instead, Revolution will offer biodegradeable, fully compostable alternatives made from PLA (a pant-based plastic) to customers who ask for a straw.

Furthermore, the group has switched to dehydrated fruit garnishes, replaced beverage napkins with ceramic coasters at Revolución de Cuba sites, and partnered with free tap water initiative Refill, which means the company is now part of the 1,600 refill stations across the UK.

The move comes as Revolution prepares to launch its new menu this month.

Myles Doran, commercial director of Revolution Bars Group, said: “We have a huge responsibility as one of the leading premium bar groups in the UK to get behind the ‘no straws’ campaign.

“By switching to dehydrated fruit we’ve already saved a third on fruit garnish wastage and reduced the number of deliveries required to our bars.

“The new measures will significantly reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste in our restaurants and bars and hopefully encourage more businesses to follow suit. We need to start acting now if we’re going to make a real difference to our environment and wildlife.”

Revolution Bars is the latest in a line of on-trade venues and spirits producers to ditch plastic straws, which are harmful to the environment.

Earlier this month, the UK’s largest nightclub operator, The Deltic Group, removed plastic straws from its venues as part of its #nostrawsattached campaign.

British pub chain JD Wetherspoon also ended its use of plastic straws across its 900 UK venues in September last year.

Meanwhile, leading drinks producers Pernod Ricard and Diageo removed non-biodegradable straws and stirrers across both businesses in January this year.
