Indiana repeals ban on Sunday alcohol sales

The US state of Indiana will permit Sunday alcohol sales for the first time in its history after new legislation was passed yesterday (28 February).

Drinkers in Indiana can now buy wine, beer and spirits on Sundays

On 28 February, Governor Eric J. Holcomb signed the Sunday Alcohol Sales Bill. The legislation will take immediate effect, meaning consumers in the state can buy wine, beer and spirits from 12pm this Sunday.

According to the Distilled Spirits Council, the move could increase Indiana’s alcohol sales by 4-6% annually, which translates to between US$3.3 million and US$5m in new retail sales.

The trade association also claims that Sunday sales could generate between US$7.7m and US$11.5m in new tax revenues for Indiana.

“Governor Holcomb listened to Indiana consumers who overwhelmingly wanted the choice and convenience of purchasing alcohol when shopping on Sunday,” said Distilled Spirits Council vice president Dale Szyndrowski.

“Hoosiers [Indiana residents] will now be able to purchase alcohol on the second busiest shopping day of the year. Helping local businesses and the economy is something that everyone can toast.”

Last year, Minnesota and Oklahoma voted to allow Sunday alcohol sales. Since 2002, 19 states have passed Sunday spirits sales legislation.
