Oklahoma OKs Sunday spirit sales

The US state of Oklahoma has become the country’s 40th to legalise spirit sales on a Sunday, a move praised by the Distilled Spirits Council.

Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin signed the legislation allowing Sunday spirits sales earlier this week.

The move means liquor stores will be able to opt to sell liquor on a Sunday from 1 October 2018.

Trade association Distilled Spirits Council praised the ending of an “archaic, Prohibition-era Blue Law”.

“Oklahomans will now be able to vote, county by county, to allow for the purchase of alcohol on the second busiest shopping day of the week,” said Dale Szyndrowski, Distilled Spirits Council vice president.

“We applaud Governor Fallin for responding to consumers who overwhelmingly want the choice and convenience of purchasing spirits when shopping on Sunday.

“This will go a long way to protecting the small, retail businesses that were negatively impacted by a loss of foot traffic due to last year’s decision to allow wine sales in grocery stores.”

Oklahoma follows action in the state of Minnesota, which voted to allow Sunday alcohol sales earlier this year.

According to the Distilled Spirits Council, since 2002 18 states have passed Sunday sales legislation.
