Suntory unveils experimental Japanese whiskiesBy Amy Hopkins
Suntory has created a new Japanese whisky collection – called The Essence of Suntory Whisky – which includes experimental bottlings from the Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries.
Available only in Japan and through online retailer Dekantā, the collection consists of three new cask-strength whiskies, which feature unique designs and branding.
Yamazaki Peated Malt is bottled at 49% abv and has been aged for 12 years. It is said to have an “influence of gentle smoke”.
Hakushu Rye Type (57% abv), aged for four years, is a rye-based grain whisky from Hakushu, which usually distils single malt for Suntory. According to Dekantā, the use of rye “brings a rich, deep spice to pair with the green, fruity Hakushu character”.
Chita Wine Cask Finish (49% abv) is a “rare” 16-year-old grain whisky that has spent four years finishing in an unspecified wine cask, providing “plum-influenced sweet and sour notes”.
“We’re delighted to offer these extremely exclusive limited release bottles to fans of Japanese whisky worldwide and congratulate Suntory on their creativity, which has brought such exciting diversity to their offering of Japanese whiskies,” said Makiyo Masa, founder of Dekantā.
The Essence of Suntory Whisky collection, quantities of which are limited, will go on sale in Japan next month and are now available for international pre-orders from Dekantā.
Beam Suntory recently expanded the Yamazaki range with the launch of the limited edition Yamazaki Mizunara Cask 2017 Edition, which has been aged for 18 years.
