The Savoy’s American Bar in London has appointed Philippa Guy as its first female senior bartender in 100 years.

Philippa Guy follows in Ada Coleman’s footsteps as senior bartender at The Savoy’s American Bar

Banbury-born Guy has spent two years working her way up the bar’s ranks. She follows in the footsteps of the famous Ada Coleman, who was senior bartender at the American Bar in the early 20th century.

Guy previously worked part time at Leeds University for Arc Inspirations, where she learnt how to make cocktails. Guy then moved to Leeds-based bar Oporto where she became bar manager after spending a year travelling.

Guy joined the American Bar in August 2015 as a server, becoming junior bartender in December 2016.

“In a city where female bartenders are the minority, impressively, Pippa has managed to break gender barriers at such a young age, through sheer determination and considerable passion,” said The Savoy.

Earlier this year, the American Bar launched the Coast to Coast cocktail menu, which was designed to represent “a journey across Britain from south to north”.
