Macallan whisky maker moves to Lakes Distillery
The Lakes Distillery, Cumbria’s first distillery in 100 years, has expanded its team with the appointment of The Macallan’s former whisky maker as its new master blender.

Dhavall Gandhi has joined the distillery ahead of the launch of The Lakes Malt – Cumbria’s only single malt whisky – in 2018.
Gandhi, a chartered scientist in distilling, has a masters degree in brewing and distilling from Heriot-Watt University and a diploma in distilling from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling.
He has previous experience in the US management consulting sector and previously acted as whisky maker for Edrington-owned Highland Scotch brand The Macallan.
“I’m looking forward to helping to create something new from the ground up and to having the rare opportunity to influence the house style of The Lakes Malt,” said Gandhi.
“The Lakes Distillery is a well-executed project and a Cumbrian success story. The state-of-the-art distillery offers a blank canvas and a potential for creativity that is unrivalled within the industry. This is my opportunity to continue telling the story through our brands.”
The Lakes Distillery, based on the banks of Bassenthwaite Lake in the UK’s Lake District, was established in 2014 by Isle Arran Distillery co-founder Paul Currie.
“We are delighted that one of the leading master blenders in the whisky industry has now joined our team,” said Currie, who is managing director of The Lakes Distillery.
“Dhavall will play a key role in ensuring that every bottle of each of our brands is of the very highest quality and he also brings many innovative ideas to ensure that all our products – whisky, gin and vodka – always offer something very special and unique.
“With our first official Lakes Malt to be launched in 2018, Dhavall joins us at a very exciting time.”
Earlier this year, The Lakes Distillery released a limited edition whisky – The One Tawny Port Cask Finish – and three new gin expressions.
Launched in 2013, The One is The Lakes Distillery’s first brand. It is a British blended whisky that contains liquid from across the British Isles.
