Casa San Matías marks 130 years with tahona edition
By Kristiane SherryFamily-owned company Casa San Matías Tequila is celebrating its 130th anniversary with the launch of San Matías Tahona in the US, created using the traditional Tequila production method.
Casa San Matías Tahona is made with a 100-year-old Tahona stone
Described as a “handmade, artisanal silver” Tequila made from 100 weber blue agave, the edition is the first modern Casa San Matías expression made sing the tahona method.
After agave piñas have been cooked in brick ovens, they are crushed using the original tahona Basalt stone used by Casa San Matías more than 100 years ago.
The method is said to extract the agave juices while retaining the sweet, aromatic flavours.
After crushing, the Casa San Matías agave juice is fermented in pine wood vats, distilled twice in copper pot stills and then bottled and hand labelled.
San Matías Tahona is available now in selected US markets at a suggested retail price of US$59.99.
Sazerac, which is the sole importer for the Tequila in the US, confirmed that more markets will be added throughout 2017.
