Woodford Reserve debuts new Distillery Series

Woodford Reserve has launched a new whiskey range that demonstrates the brand’s “creative dexterity” and initially consists of a Double Double Oaked and Sweet Mash Redux straight Bourbon.

The Woodford Reserve Distillery Series consists of three small batch expressions released concurrently each year

The brand will release up to three small batch expressions in its new Distillery Series concurrently at different times throughout the year, ranging from finished whiskeys to straight Bourbons and other “unique spirits”.

Master distiller Chris Morris has adjusted one or more of four aspects in the whiskey creation process – grain, fermentation, distillation, and maturation – when creating whiskeys included in the range.

The collection’s two inaugural offerings, Double Double Oaked and Sweet Mash Redux, will be available exclusively from the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky.

Double Double Oaked is the result of finishing Woodford Reserve Double Oaked for an additional year in a second, heavily toasted and lightly charred new oak barrel.

Sweet Mash Redux first appeared in the 2008 Master’s Collection and was called Sweet Mash Finish.

The expression swaps the use of sour mash in the traditional Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select for a non-soured mash with a higher pH effect and more pertinent fruity notes by modifying the fermentation process.

Woodford Reserve Double Double Oaked is said to have a flavour of dried cherry, blackberry, apple and chai tea, while Woodford Reserve Sweet Mash Redux has a soft and sweet taste with hints of spice, cedar and oak.

“With the Woodford Reserve Distillery Series, we used our industry and sensory knowledge to create an eclectic line of one-of-a-kind expressions,” said master distiller Morris.

“By pushing the creative boundaries of whiskeys even further, we are inviting our customers who visit our distillery to experience extreme variations of whiskey.”

Both new Bourbons are priced US$49.99 for a 375ml bottle.

Last month, brand owner Brown-Forman extended the availability of Woodford Reserve’s rye whiskey to the UK.
