Glasgow distillery buys rare casks for first release
The first distillery to be built in Glasgow in 100 years has acquired a selection of “rare” single malt whisky casks to bottle ahead of creating its own Scotch.
The Glasgow Distillery Company has purchased “rare” Speyside casks to bottle for its first whisky release
The Glasgow Distillery Company (GDC), which beat the £10 million Glasgow Distillery and Visitors’ Centre to become the city’s first distillery in almost a century, has purchased a batch of Speyside casks aged for around 30 years.
While the company will shortly commence making its own single malt whisky, the acquired casks will be launched under the brand name Prometheus.
“This is a wonderful addition to our business,” said Liam Hughes, CEO of the GDC. “This is the kind of product we aspire to produce from our own stills in the years to come and it sets a very high benchmark for our own distillers.”
“Aged single malts are becoming more and more difficult to come by and we are very honoured to be entrusted with finally bringing this special single malt Scotch whisky to the marketplace.”
The Glasgow Distillery Company is named after a distillery in the city’s Dundashill area which operated between 1770 and the early 20th Century.
In August this year, the new site released its first product – Makar Glasgow Gin, named after the Gaelic word for poet or bard.
