The story behind the Rebel Bourbon barrel pick
When The Spirits Business heard about a barrel of Rebel Bourbon from Lux Row Distillers that, understandably, was no longer able to be sold by the Silpo supermarket chain in Ukraine, we teamed up with Lux Row to find a happy ending to this story.
A select number of Rebel Bourbon barrel picks are made available to a small number of customers around the world each year. They’re often sold though bars and shops as limited editions, and this particular barrel was hand-picked by the Silpo buyer to be sold in their stores in Ukraine. After the country was invaded by Russia, the original order was suspended via mutual agreement by both the distillery and the customer, with no money changing hands.
This Rebel Bourbon barrel pick has now been donated to The Spirits Business for auction, with proceeds going to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal to help people affected by the war in the Ukraine.
The Spirits Business, will host the auction from 29 June to 29 July, when bids can be submitted above. The winning bidder will receive between 200-240 bottles (750ml, 56.5% ABV) of Rebel Bourbon, after the barrel is bottled and shipped to the UK in September 2022. The final number of bottles will vary due to the evaporation of the whiskey (the 'angel’s share') as it ages in its rickhouse in Bardstown, Kentucky, US.
A conservative reserve price of £5,000 has been set for the auction, with the retail value of these barrel picks usually topping £8,000. Proceeds from the auction, minus £500 to cover shipping and handling fees, will be donated by The Spirits Business to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
The Spirits Business is running this auction and supporting promotional activity completely free of charge. Lux Row Distillers has donated the Rebel Bourbon barrel pick free of charge.
