Caledonia Spirits hires former Breakthru exec to lead expansion
Former Breakthru Beverage Group executive John Oliver has joined Vermont-based Caledonia Spirits as vice-president of sales.

Oliver spent nearly 19 years at US distributor Breakthru Beverage Group, where he held positions including national trade marketing director and senior director of business development.
He is now directing sales strategy for Caledonia Spirits, which opened its multi-million-dollar solar-powered distillery in Montpelier, Vermont, in July 2019.
Caledonia’s portfolio includes the flagship Barr Hill line with a gin and a vodka made from 100% raw honey, Tom Cat Gin, and a ready-to-drink (RTD) Picnic Cocktails range. It also produces Phyllis Vermont Rye Whiskey, with milling, fermenting, distilling, and ageing done in-house.
At Breakthru, as part of the distributor’s emerging spirits strategy team, Trident, Oliver also helped incubate and grow emerging spirit brands, including Barr Hill. He helped expand the brand’s presence across 14 of the distributor’s markets.
“Barr Hill answers the call for brands that exemplify a true sense of place,” Oliver said. “By using our northeast wildflower honey in every bottle of Barr Hill Gin and Barr Hill Vodka, we are capturing the terroir of Vermont and providing a point of difference both in flavour and story for our customers and consumers.”
Oliver’s appointment comes as the distillery has seen 18% growth in the last year in its Northeast markets. The markets include its home state Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New York and New Jersey.
The growth is said to be driven by Barr Hill Gin and its Bee’s Knees Week campaign, held annually in June. The initiative’s 2026 run involved more than 5,000 bars, restaurants and retail outlets throughout the US, celebrating the Bee’s Knees cocktail while also supporting the preservation of pollinator habitats with more than 1.5 million acres preserved.
The distillery also highlighted its recently launched low-ABV limited edition RTD Barr Hill cocktail line as another growth driver.
Of the northeast focus, Oliver said: “We are seeing tremendous growth in the northeast markets and will be doubling down on that strategy over the next two years.
“Nationally, the focus is on a targeted approach working with restaurateurs, bartenders and retailers that connect with our brand pillars of sustainability, supporting bee culture and featuring brands that bring something different to the table.”
Caledonia Spirits’ Barr Hill line is available nationwide in more than 30 markets.
President and head distiller, Ryan Christiansen, added: “We’re excited to welcome John Oliver to Caledonia Spirits. His experience building brands and understanding the distributor landscape gives him a unique perspective as we enter our next chapter of growth.
“It will help us build on the success of Barr Hill, introduce more consumers to Phyllis Vermont Rye, and continue growing our portfolio of distinctive spirits.”
