Glen Moray unveils Forbidden Fruit

Speyside distillery Glen Moray will launch a single malt whisky finished in Calvados casks next month, titled Forbidden Fruit.

Forbidden Fruit marks the third whisky in Glen Moray’s Xperience Collection, joining previous releases Phoenix Rising and Twisted Vine in the range.

While the first two releases explore heavily charred oak and Cognac cask maturation, respectively, Forbidden Fruit has been finished in French oak casks previously used to mature the French apple-based brandy, Calvados.

For the whisky, the distillery’s team laid a single malt aged in Bourbon casks in the French oak to see how the Calvados would combine with Glen Moray’s Speyside profile.

Glen Moray global brand ambassador Iain Allan said: “Cask exploration has been a huge part of the Glen Moray Distillery story for over a century, and Forbidden Fruit is a wonderful new testament to this heritage.

“It is a sweet, spicy and very moreish single malt which we’re sure will be a tempting treat for whisky fans to explore, whether they are connoisseurs or new to single malts.”

The whisky has subtle fruit notes and warm spices from the Calvados.

On the nose, drinkers may get aromas of green apple, toffee and sweet pastries. Apple pie, vanilla custard, barley sugar and very subtle wood tannins can then be found on the palate, while the finish is described as ‘long, with an initial spice which subsides to reveal notes of oak with poached pears and cloves’.

The expression’s packaging features a scarlet apple against the distillery’s dark blue, cradled by golden leaves to bring the whisky’s story to life.

Glen Moray Forbidden Fruit will be available from specialist whisky retailers throughout the UK and in Morrisons stores across Scotland from April.

It is bottled at 40% ABV and retails for £32 (US$43).

Last year, the La Martiniquaise-Bardinet-owned brand experimented with Tequila and maple syrup casks.

Meanwhile, in Calvados news, sales of the spirit dipped in 2025 with volumes falling by 5.6%.
