Redbreast unveils Moscatel cask edition

Irish Distillers-owned Redbreast has introduced the Moscatel Wine Cask Edition as the fifth expression in its Iberian Series.

The new limited edition introduces an additional layer to the brand’s signature ex-Bourbon and oloroso Sherry cask-matured single pot still whiskey. The expression was finished in Moscatel casks for 16 months and is bottled at 46% ABV.

Created by master blender David McCabe, the limited edition utilises Moscatel wine casks from the Bodegas Quitapenas in Málaga, southern Spain.

Fifth-generation custodians Marta Suárez Prieto and Víctor Suárez Onrubial manage the winery. Under their careful supervision, the European oak hogsheads were seasoned with Moscatel wine for two years before being sent to Midleton Distillery.

McCabe commented: “The launch of Redbreast Moscatel Wine Cask Edition is a celebration of Redbreast’s heritage, craftsmanship, and incredible legacy dating back to the late 1800s.

“The use of Spanish Moscatel-seasoned casks is a tribute to Redbreast’s historic ties to Sherry and fortified wines, and our appreciation for the incredible people across the region, including Marta and her family at Bodegas Quitapenas, which was founded in 1880. Their remarkable family heritage inspired the richness and depth of this expression.”

The whiskey begins with notes of sweet tangerine and twisted orange peel, complemented by delicate herbal hints of chamomile tea, nutmeg, and cedarwood. The wine-seasoned oak imparts flavours of vanilla, complemented by floral honey and sugar-glazed fruits.

Prieto added: “It has been a great honour to work with David and his team at Midleton on the launch of Redbreast Moscatel Wine Cask Edition, which pays such a wonderful tribute to our rich family history.

“Along with my cousin Víctor, we have taken great care to season the casks perfectly, to ensure the new expression is infused with wonderful flavour notes of sweet honey, dates and caramelised fruits alongside gentle herbal, floral and citrus tones.”

Redbreast Moscatel Wine Cask Edition is available from the brand’s website for US$109.99.

The fifth edition in the Iberian Series follows Redbreast PX Edition in 2021, the Lustau Edition in 2022, the Tawny Port Cask Edition in 2023, and the Cuatro Barilles Edition in 2024.
