New documentary tells Old Forester’s story

The 156-year history of Old Forester Bourbon in Louisville, Kentucky, is the subject of a new documentary.

Old Forester is the ‘only’ Bourbon brand to exist before, during and after Prohibition.

The Balas Brothers of Brooklyn created the film as part of their Whiskeyland series.

“We’re honoured to share the story of Old Forester, founded by George Garvin Brown in 1870, with a wider audience,” said assistant master distiller Caleb Trigo.

The episode is available to watch on the Whiskeyland TV YouTube channel, or you can watch it below. It will launch soon on streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime, Relay and Tubi.

“What excited us most about making this episode was the chance to dive deep into America’s oldest whiskey brand, Old Forester, and bring the archives and tales to life, only to realise that, in the process, we were becoming part of that same tradition,” added filmmaker Ryan Balas.

The documentary’s release celebrates the return of 1924, Old Forester’s 10-year-old age-statement Bourbon in the Whiskey Row series.

1924 honours a moment when Old Forester acquired barrels from distilleries forced to close during Prohibition, which the brand took and bottled under its name. The brand was one of a few distilleries allowed to continue operations due to obtaining a medicinal whiskey permit.

The whiskey has notes of ‘chocolate-covered graham cracker dusted with cinnamon’, with hints of spice on the finish.

Bottled at 50% ABV, Old Forester 1924 is available to purchase from the distillery, its website and participating retailers.

Last month, the distillery created a limited release for Repeal Day.
