SB meets… Claudio Renaud Álvarez, Ron Matusalem
By Miona MadsenFounded in 1872, Ron Matusalem is one of the oldest independent rum brands in the world. The brand’s president and fifth-generation family member reveals the secrets behind Matusalem’s longevity.

What importance does family and tradition hold for Ron Matusalem?
It means everything to us. It embodies the commitment of my family and of all the generations who have devoted themselves to preserving an iconic brand through 150 years of challenges and triumphs. Each generation has contributed to keeping Matusalem alive, protecting not just a name, but a legacy rich in history and meaning.
Ultimately, it is our family’s resilience and unwavering dedication to maintaining the highest standards that have allowed Matusalem to endure. For us, tradition is born from longevity, passion, and commitment; I truly believe that is the secret behind Ron Matusalem’s success.
What have been the most significant milestones for Matusalem?
After so many years and challenges, we’re still producing rum of the same high quality. Remaining family‐owned, selling in 70 countries across the world, and keeping the same philosophy of excellence since our beginnings in Cuba are all achievements we take great pride in.
How is the brand paying tribute to its heritage?
Honouring our heritage is at the heart of everything we do. We continue to age our rums using the same methods and original recipe that have defined Matusalem for 150 years, while preserving the innovative spirit that has guided us since the beginning. A great example of this is our Tributes collection. The Lefebre Limited Edition pays a special homage to my great-grandfather, Claudio Álvarez I, who led the company during Cuba’s Golden Age.
His legacy inspired this edition, which celebrates our tradition and craftsmanship while revisiting our early use of the solera system and French oak barrels.
What is the brand’s approach to wood management?
The Álvarez family has always been involved in selecting the barrels that enter our cellars, a know-how that gives us a clear vision and confidence when it comes to innovation. Today, our rums are aged in casks made of American, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Japanese oak.
We are deepening our understanding of how climate change affects different types of wood, researching forests, and ensuring full traceability of every barrel. It is a continuous journey of learning and respect – one that reflects our dedication. Barrels are like music notes – there are endless possible combinations. Consumers can expect new expressions of Matusalem that push creativity while preserving the harmony and refinement that define us.
What innovations has the brand made in the past 10 years?
Innovation for us always begins with respecting our foundations. If something has endured that long, it’s because it’s rooted in quality. Our innovations emerge from refining that legacy – new limited editions, experimental blends, and creative packaging that uphold the same elegance and philosophy of Matusalem. We innovate within our core values of quality, craftsmanship, and timeless style.
How are you preserving the brand’s legacy for future generations?
My goal is to maintain the same high standards that my family has upheld since the beginning. At the same time, I see my role as bridging tradition with innovation, ensuring that the next generation inherits not only a respected brand but also a creative vision for its future.
If I can leave a mark through innovative products that respect our history while inspiring future generations, I will be proud. Being able to contribute my own creative touch to something that has meant so much to my family for over a century is both a responsibility and a privilege.
