SB’s 12 Drinks of Christmas – Mermaid Winter Gin
The first day of December has arrived, and with it, the first day of The Spirits Business‘ 12 Drinks of Christmas countdown.
The tree is up, the Hallmark movie marathons have begun, and Michael Bublé has been taken off ice – that’s right, Christmas is officially on its way, and to mark the run-up to the big day, we’re going to be sharing 12 delightfully festive releases and suitably seasonal serves to see you through to the moment you can finally put that ‘out of office’ on – and we’re kicking things off with the perfect winter tipple.
As the seasons turn, it is reported that gin quietly becomes the nation’s favourite spirit. In fact, Google searches for gin have been seen to peak every November and December for the past three years, suggesting it’s a spirit at the heart of how we celebrate.
In time for cosy nights and festive gatherings, Mermaid has unveiled its latest offering from the Isle of Wight Distillery, a rare seasonal treasure: Mermaid Winter Gin.
Crafted in small batches and available only during the autumn/winter period, this limited edition gin has been crafted to reflect the changing of the seasons in exclusive partnership with John Lewis.
Xavier Baker, co-founder of the Isle of Wight Distillery, explained: “This summer brought a fruitful harvest, giving us an abundance of figs and ripe grapes. Blended with warming cassia, bright orange peel, and Isle of Wight honey, this gin brings those seasonal flavours to life – perfect for those simple, special moments of gathering, sharing, and enjoying the festive season.”
Encased in Mermaid’s iconic plastic-free sustainable bottle (this time with a purple hue), Mermaid Winter Gin doesn’t just taste great, it looks the part too. A limited edition collectible, it’s a seasonal statement and the perfect gift to give, share, or savour.
Mermaid Winter Gin is available exclusively via the John Lewis app, in stores, and online for RRP £40 (US$53), and is the perfect bottle to bring flavour, flair and a little bit of island spirit to your festive celebrations this year.
How to drink it
The Perfect Serve
Ingredients:
- 50ml Mermaid Winter Gin
- A splash of Fever-Tree Refreshingly Light Tonic Water
- Garnish: a dehydrated orange wheel and a sprig of rosemary
Method: Build in your favourite glass over ice and serve.
Mermaid Winter Negroni
Ingredients:
- 35ml Mermaid Winter Gin
- 25ml Campari
- 25ml Mulled wine, served hot or cold
- Garnish: a dehydrated orange wheel
Method: If serving warm (and we suggest you do), simply build your drink in your favourite (and most elegant) mug, and serve. If you’d prefer it cold, add in a big ice cube to keep the temperature down while avoiding too much dilution, and serve in a rocks glass.
Mermaid Figue 75
Ingredients:
- 25ml Mermaid Winter Gin
- 12.5ml Cointreau
- Top with Prosecco
- Garnish: a twist of orange peel
Method: Pour your gin and Cointreau into a flute and gently top with Prosecco. Garnish with your orange peel twist and cheers to the holidays.
