Family-owned Tequila brand Arette is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its birthplace, El Llano Distillery, this year.

Founded in 1900 by the Orendain family in the town of Tequila, El Llano is Mexico’s oldest independently owned and family-run Tequila distillery.

Since 1986, brothers Eduardo and Jaime Orendain have been at the helm of Tequila Arette, preserving a five-generation legacy rooted in Mexico’s cultural and agricultural traditions, and in craftsmanship and pride.

Today, Eduardo Jr and Alex Orendain continue this legacy by honouring the distillery’s core values while also embracing responsible growth.

Jaime commented: “What fills us with pride is seeing all the people who are part of our distillery. To us, they are family – and this recognition is also a tribute to them, because none of what we’ve achieved would be possible without their effort.”

As Arette grows internationally, the brand collaborates closely with partners who share its commitment to authenticity and independent producers, enhancing its presence across Europe and beyond.

In Europe, Arette is distributed by Stockholm-based agave spirits specialist AliasSmith.

In 2025, Tequila Arette received the Empresa Socialmente Responsable (ESR) designation from Cemefi, which recognises the brand’s commitment to ethical practices, sustainability, and community engagement.

Arette has also earned the Hecho en México and Kosher certifications, further demonstrating its dedication to quality and transparency.

The brand has invested in its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, including responsible agave cultivation and rural stewardship, as well as fair labour policies and ethical supplier relationships.

As the distillery celebrates its 125th anniversary, Arette is set on pursuing B Corp certification, which aligns with a global movement that balances business performance with social and environmental impact.

The Orendain family explained its ethos: “Our purpose goes beyond crafting exceptional Tequila – it’s about giving back to the land, the families and the community that have made our story possible.”
