Clase Azul concludes Día de Muertos series

Luxury Tequila Clase Azul Mexico has unveiled Día de Muertos Edición Limitada Recuerdos, the fifth and final expression in its annual Nuestros Recuerdos series.

Clase Azul
Clase Azul’s five-year series has concluded with a Tequila that pays homage to memories of the dead

Presented in a limited edition decanter, the concluding expression in the collection is said to stand as both a tribute and a keepsake, capturing the spirit of the Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) season in every detail.

Día de Muertos is a Mexican tradition that is celebrated on the first two days of November, and welcomes deceased loved ones back to the world of the living through offerings and memories in the form of altars, known as ofrendas, which are often adorned with photographs, candles, food and the favourite items of the departed.

Clase Azul Mexico’s annual limited edition Tequilas pay homage to the soul of Día de Muertos, with the Nuestros Recuerdos (‘our memories’) series specifically highlighting the key elements of the celebrations everywhere.

The series debuted in 2021 with Sabores (‘Flavours’), continued with Colores (‘Colours’) in 2022, followed by Aromas in 2023 and then with Musica (‘Music’) in 2024.

This final offering in the five-year series, Recuerdos (‘Memories’), honours the root of the tradition, seeking to keeping the memories of loved ones ever-present.

The Tequila was crafted under the direction of master distiller Viridiana Tinoco. It is a blend of spirits aged from 12 to 38 months in first-fill American whiskey casks.

A portion of the agave was cooked in a traditional pit oven, adding rich sensory depth and a layered complexity, which is said to be an homage to the intricate nature of our most cherished memories.

Tinoco said this añejo Tequila is “a nostalgic return to my grandmother’s kitchen, to the wood-fired stove where she made tortillas,” further explaining that its notes of wood and smoke awaken vivid memories steeped in deep affection.

“Creating this Tequila was a way to relive those moments with the heart and transform them into a liquid tribute,” she said. “More than a Tequila, it is an act of  love – one that turns nostalgia into presence.”

The one-litre decanter features a 24-karat gold coated ornament shaped like a locket

The Tequila is described as an elegant expression that offers aromas of cooked agave, smoked wood, orange peel, caramel and clove. Meanwhile the palate reveals orange marmalade and delicate spiced notes of clove  and cinnamon, culminating in a long, lingering finish of citrus and toasted wood.

As is tradition with the series, this final 40% ABV Tequila is housed in a specially designed decanter, which has been crafted by artisans.

Ivory in colour, each one-litre decanter housing this final expression is adorned with artwork by Mexican artist Erika Rivera, which portrays a traditional ofrenda surrounded by spirits rendered in gentle tones, representing a bridge between ritual and  remembrance.

Rivera, originally from Guadalajara and now based in Melbourne, Australia, drew inspiration from her own longing for home and the deep traditions of Día de Muertos.

The ornament, shaped like a locket and coated 24-karat gold, opens to reveal a reflective obsidian cameo – a nod to the mirrors placed on ofrendas so that visiting souls may recognise themselves. Its face is decorated with intricate decorative charms called milagritos in bas-relief, representing faith, gratitude and devotion.

This artisanal piece was handcrafted by Milagros de Latón, a family-run brass workshop in Tesistán, Jalisco, which has created the ornaments for every edition in the Nuestros Recuerdos series.

More than 50 meticulous steps, ranging from lost wax casting to hand polishing and gold plating, were required to bring each ornament to life.

Clase Azul Tequila Día de Muertos Edición Limitada Recuerdos is now available, with a suggested retail price of US$1,900. Only 10,000 decanters are available.
