Meikle Tòir debuts single cask whiskies
Independent distillery The GlenAllachie has released an exclusive Meikle Tòir single cask collection, the first of its kind for the peated single malt brand.
Meikle Tòir’s single cask collection consists of two expressions aged in different types of Sherry casks: a distillery exclusive 2018 Pedro Ximénez Sherry hogshead and an online exclusive 2019 oloroso Sherry hogshead.
Master distiller Billy Walker chose the two single casks for their ‘exceptional nature’, capturing the distillery’s signature mainland peated spirit that’s produced using mainland peat sourced from St Fergus.
Walker said: “When selecting our first Meikle Tòir single casks, I was looking for whiskies that truly captured the bold, smoky character that defines the range, with added depth and complexity from exceptional sherry cask maturation.
“These two casks stood out to me straight away. Both are a real reflection of the signature peated style we’ve been evolving at the distillery: full of robust sherry character, yet still true to the sweet and smoky mainland spirit of Meikle Tòir.
He added: “We have bottled them at natural strength, so what you are tasting is as close as it gets to sampling straight from the cask. No fuss – just great, honest whisky.”
The 2018 vintage Meikle Tòir represents the brand’s inaugural distillery-exclusive single-cask release.
The single malt was aged in a first-fill Pedro Ximénez Sherry cask for seven years, resulting in layers of fig jam, toasted hazelnuts, honeyed spice, citrus sweetness with notes of chocolate and marzipan.
Available only at The GlenAllachie Distillery, the single malt is peated to 44ppm (phenol parts per million) and limited to 355 bottles at 59.9% ABV.
The second release, the 2019 vintage, was peated to 47ppm and matured exclusively for six years in an Oloroso Sherry cask.
The single malt balances sweetness and spice with aromas of soft tobacco, figs, and orange. On the palate, it offers flavours of mocha, grilled honeycomb, and smoked fruits.
Available to purchase only on the brand’s website, the single cask release is bottled at 60.5% ABV and limited to 357 bottles.
Both bottlings are offered at natural cask strength, non-chill filtered with natural colour, and retail for £75.99 (US$100).
The inaugural single cask expressions are said to be followed by additional releases planned for the international market.
The GlenAllachie launched Meikle Tòir in 2023 to showcase its peated spirit, which was first produced at the distillery in 2018. The first peated whisky from the distillery was released in 2022.
