Ad Gefrin finishes whisky in Cognac casks

England’s northernmost distillery Ad Gefrin has created a limited edition version of its signature blended whisky.

Tácnbora takes its name from the Old English word for ‘standard bearer’, a ceremonial figure who walked ahead of Northumbria’s kings. The name is intended to represent the whisky leading the way to Ad Gefrin’s first Northumbrian single malt, which is currently maturing and expected to be released in 2026.

The blend is made with a combination of Scotch and Irish whiskies and debuted in 2022.

The latest edition has spent its final six months in ex-Cognac oak at the Ad Gefrin distillery in Northumberland. It layers ‘richness, structure, and subtle spice’ onto the original Tácnbora’s ‘honeyed’ profile.

Only six casks were bottled, yielding between 1,800 and 2,000 bottles. The liquid has been bottled at cask strength (58.6% ABV).

First access will be given to members of Corenkyn and Corengyst, Ad Gefrin’s membership communities. It is priced at £57 (US$78).

Director of distilling Ben Murphy said: “Our journey with casks continues to evolve and excite. The Cognac finish adds a dry fruit character and gentle spice that enhances the signature sweetness of Tácnbora. It’s a wonderful example of how different casks can elevate a whisky while still retaining its heart.”

The release follows Tácnbora Peated Islay Cask, which launched in October 2023 and sold out by January 2024.

Corenkyn members also receive an exclusive blend every year, with the most recent being an ex-Madeira cask finish released in March 2025.
