Kiyokawa secures food safety certificate
By Miona MadsenJapanese distillery Kiyokawa has received ISO 22000 certification, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and provenance.

Located in the Japanese Alps in the Nagano Prefecture, Kiyokawa Distillery was founded in 2019 by David Troiano.
The site, which is also known as Iiyama Mountain Farm Distillery, operates with a farm-to-bottle ideology and is home to Kiyokawa Gin and Yamagiri Vodka. It is expected to launch its inaugural whisky this year.
Kiyokawa Distillery has now been recognised with an ISO 22000 certification, the international benchmark for food safety management.
According to the distillery, the certification is ‘rare among Japanese distilleries and nearly unprecedented within the craft whisky sector’.
The distillery champions ingredient cultivation, fermentation, distillation, and bottling at its mountain facility, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern traceability and compliance systems.
The ISO 22000 certification is said to underscore Kiyokawa’s commitment to precision, operational integrity, and production.
Troiano commented: “This is more than a procedural milestone, it’s a statement of who we are as a distillery. It’s the result of months of preparation and intense work. It was certainly demanding, but I’m proud to have led our team through the process. This achievement reflects the dedication of everyone at Kiyokawa.”
For the distillery, the recognition signals a shift in the craft spirits industry, where authenticity is defined not only by traditional methods but also by transparency and provenance.
Kiyokawa strives to be among a select group of forward-thinking Japanese distilleries implementing internationally recognised standards in a typically artisanal process.
The distillery aims to strengthen its position within the premium spirits market by enhancing its potential for international distribution and strategic brand partnerships.
Last year, Kiyokawa partnered with Dekantā to offer whisky casks for sale.
