Public alcohol consumption in Thailand ‘off limits’

Partying and drinking alcohol in public places in Thailand are “off limits” after the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died last week after 70 years on the throne, reports say.

The Thai government has declared a year-long period of mourning

According to Bloomberg, the government has declared a year-long period of mourning, calling for people to avoid “joyful events” for the next 30 days and asked visitors to the country to act respectfully.

As part of the declaration, local bars are refraining from playing music and dancing in nightclubs is prohibited.

As a result, local travel operators are said to be bracing themselves for a slowdown in tourism over the coming months, with both the on- and off-trade taking a hit.

Additionally, Koh Phangan’s infamous full moon party – a monthly beach festival on the island – has been cancelled while websites have turned black and white, and television channels have been switched to royal broadcasts.

According to government officials, Thailand’s Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has postponed his accession to the throne for at least a year.
