Spirit of Gallo has entered the super-premium gin category after making a strategic investment in Mexican brand Condesa.

The deal – terms of which were undisclosed – will see Spirit of Gallo become the exclusive US importer for Condesa Gin.

Citing IWSR Drinks Market Analysis data, Spirit of Gallo said the super-premium gin category is projected to grow by 6.1% by both volume and value between 2022 and 2027.

“Condesa Gin fits perfectly in our portfolio as our first super-premium gin offering,” said Britt West, executive vice-president and general manager, Spirit of Gallo.

“The gin category is evolving, as consumers trade up to premium brands from interesting places with compelling stories.

“We know Condesa will appeal to consumers who want a truly unique and creative experience, and we look forward to working with the founders and ownership team to help Condesa reach its full potential.”

The brand is described as the fastest-growing super-premium gin in Mexico.

Produced in Mexico, Condesa Gin is said to reflect a younger and more cosmopolitan vision of the country, beyond agave spirits.

Named after a neighbourhood in Mexico City, Condesa was created by master distiller Hillhamn Salome in a microdistillery in the city.

Jordi Nieto, co-founder of Condesa Gin, said: “This partnership allows us to expand our community and distribution in the US, while advancing us on our journey to become a leader in the luxury gin space.”

Condesa Gin currently offers two expressions: Clásica, and Prickly Pear & Orange Blossom. The gins are priced at US$39.99 and can be spotted in bars in Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles and Rome.

Spirit of Gallo is the spirits arm of California-based wine maker Gallo, formerly known as E&J Gallo.

Gallo’s spirits portfolio includes hard seltzer brand High Noon, New Amsterdam Vodka, RumChata liqueur and Camarena Tequila, among others.

The company also produces Stratusphere Gin under its New Amsterdam brand.

Earlier this year, West highlighted American whiskey and vodka as areas of “white space” in the group’s portfolio.

Gallo recently tapped into the Korean soju market with a distribution partnership with Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co.
