El Silencio mezcal plans US expansion
By Melita KielyMezcal brand El Silencio intends to ramp up its availability in the US to 44 states with the help of national distributor Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits.
El Silencio mezcal will expand to 44 US states this year
El Silencio is currently available in 12 US states in partnership with Southern Glazer’s, but will expand to an additional 32 markets this year, including New York, Florida and Colorado.
The mezcal brand first launched four years ago, and now claims to be the fastest growing mezcal brand in the US.
Earlier this year, El Silencio closed a ‘series B’ round of investment with a private equity group, which it says will “fuel the growth” of the brand in the US.
Fausto Zapata, co-founder and CEO of El Silencio, said: “The explosive success of Silencio has, to a great degree, been the result of a phenomenal collaboration with Southern Glazer’s since our company’s inception.
“Their visionary leadership and the calibre of its team not only make Southern Glazer’s the juggernaut that they are, but also the perfect partner and ally for El Silencio in achieving our long term growth plans.”
Southern Glazer’s received a rap on the knuckles towards the end of 2017 and was fined US$3.5 million for partaking in illegal ‘pay-to-play’ schemes.
In response, the firm said it had made “significant improvements” to its employee compliance programme and assured it takes a “zero tolerance” approach to pay-to-play schemes.
