Discus seeks ‘equal treatment’ for spirits

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (Discus) is seeking to bring spirits regulations in line with wine and beer in Colorado with the submission of two ballot initiatives.

The trade association will ask the Colorado Legislative Title Board to consider two ballot initiatives: one would include distilled spirits along with wine and beer sales in grocery stores; the second would allow all off-premise license holders to have as many as 10 licenses rather than one as permitted under current law.

“Recent poll results indicate that 70 percent of Colorado voters feel the same rules should apply to the sale of beer, wine and spirits,” said DISCUS Vice President Dale Szyndrowski.

“Colorado’s craft beer, wine and distilled spirits industry needs a healthy retail marketplace to grow and thrive. Our solution protects small local retailers, while providing consumers the choice and convenience that they want.”

Earlier this month, Discus elected Moët Hennessy North America CEO Jim Clerkin as its new chairman.
