Bike helmet with built-in breathalyser invented
By Annie HayesStudents in India have created a helmet that breathalyses motorcyclists before they are allowed to start the engine of their bikes.
The vehicle will only start if the driver meets the criteria for Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) – so no tricks like these if bikers are over the limitThe Advanced Breath-analyser Helmet works by using Bluetooth encryption technology to breathalyse the driver.
The vehicle will only start if the driver meets the criteria for Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) which is measured by their breath.
“It makes it mandatory for the driver to wear his helmet and have a tolerable alcohol level in his breath so as to start his vehicle,” a student innovator told Times of India.
“The helmet analyses the alcohol content in the driver’s breath and directs the vehicle through a wireless signal to start or stop accordingly.”
In addition to combatting drunk driving incidents including fatalities caused by motorcyclists who do not wear a helmet, the innovation could also help to cut bike thefts.
The advanced helmet is one of five innovative projects that made it through to the finals of the Ericsson Innovation Awards held at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi.
