Amrut launches ‘world’s first’ whisky with orange
By Melita KielyIndian spirits producer Amrut Distilleries has launched the “world’s first ever” single malt whisky with orange, called Amrut Naarangi.
Amrut Distillery has created the “world’s first” whisky with orangeBased in Bangalore, the distillery’s newest product takes its name from the Hindi word ‘naarangi’, meaning ‘orange.’
To create Amrut Naarangi, the distiller married Olorosso Sherry from Spain, matured wine and orange peels from Madikeri in the Western Ghats of India in barrels for a total of three years.
The barrels were then emptied and filled with three-year-old single malt whisky and left to age for a further three years.
Amrut has distributed 900 bottles of Naarangi to Europe, Asia Pacific and Canada.
With an abv of 50%, Naarangi joins the distillery’s existing whisky portfolio of Amrut Fusion, Amrut Portonova and Amrut Peated.
“The whisky is not dominated by the orange but remarkably balanced out,” commented Ashok Chokalingam, general manager of international markets, Amrut.
“The finish is of subtle orange notes while in the middle ground you can find the traditional Amrut signature.”
