The week in pictures

After eight months of operation, Cotswold Distillery has finally named its two copper pot stills and experimental still after musical legends: Proud Mary (the song by Ike & Tina Turner), Janis (after Janis Joplin), and Lorelei (a song by Ira and George Gershwin).

The world’s largest trade cocktail festival has announced its seminar line-up for 2015, and The Spirits Business is proud to announce that our editor, Becky Paskin, will be leading a presentation titled “Write Yourself Famous”, aided by talented whisky writer Dave Broom and Death & Co co-owner Dave Kaplan. Brisbane’s bartenders have gone nude for a charity calendar, including the team from the Bosc bar, who felt the best way to raise money for Karuna, a palliative care charity, was to strip down and cuddle some jugs and a dog. The calendar is the brain child of The Scratch Bar’s Benjamin Nichols, and features images such as this one above, a fetching portrait of The Bosc’s bar team. Photo: Benjamin Nichols.

Greenall’s celebrated its partnership with the Jockey Club as official sponsor at its kick-off race meet this week. Greenall’s will be present at over 300 horse racing events this year, including the Cheltenham Festival, The Derby, and the July Festival at Newmarket. Racegoers were seen having a good time with Greenall’s at Kempton Park Races, as part of the new sales and marketing campaign.

 

Earlier this week The Rum Masters 2015 descended on The Jugged Hare in Chiswell Street in London, where the great and good of the UK rum industry sat to examine a record number of rums. Rum writer and presenter Peter Holland (left) brightened up the miserable grey winter day with his suitably Caribbean-themed shirt, while Jamie Kimber, bar amnager of Trailer Happiness (right) took the tasting more seriously.

Nineteen-time British Champion National Hunt jockey,  AP McCoy claimed the 25th running of the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown on Carlingford Lough last weekend in Ireland. A host of celebrities enjoyed the Hennessy Gold Cup Day including model Roz Purcell, stylist/TV presenter Cathy o’Connor and journalist Avila Lipsett.  Attendees from the sporting world included Ian Renton, CEO of Cheltenham, Ivan Yates and Ken Doherty.

The Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SoFab) in New Orleans, Louisiana, welcomed King Cocktail Dale DeGroff as it unveiled its re-installed Museum of the American Cocktail. Founded by DeGroff, the Museum of the American Cocktail was founded in 2008, but has been given a facelift at SoFab this week.

Jameson unveiled its limited edition St. Patrick’s Day bottle at a VIP event at Hixter Bankside in London this week, where illustrator Steve Simpson was on-hand to discuss his designs and inspiration behind the bottle. Cocktails flowed at the event, courtesy of the bear team at Hixster (pictures), while Jameson international brand director Daniel Lundberg revealed the significance of St Patrick’s Day for the Irish whiskey brand and current marketing acitivities.

SB’s Melita Kiely flew to Cognac this week with the BNIC for a jam packed few days filled with distillery trips and tastings. First point of call was the Martell distillery with a tour and tasting with distillery manager Laurent Nony.

Also included in the BNIC’s itinerary was a visit to Remy Martin’s distillery, led by Remy Martin international brand ambassador Gan Chian Mei and master distiller Jean Marie Bernard.
