Pringuet appointed chair of Scotch Whisky Association
By Becky PaskinThe Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has appointed Pierre Pringuet, CEO of French drinks group Pernod Ricard, as its new chairman.
Pernod Ricard CEO Pierre Pringuet has been appointed chair of the Scotch Whisky AssociationThe SWA claims the appointment of Pringuet, who succeeds Edrington CEO Ian Curle in the role, “shows the ‘auld alliance’ between Scotland and France remains strong”.
Pringuet will now work closely with SWA CEO David Frost to guide the Scotch whisky industry over the next few years.
One of the items high on his agenda will be the launch of a campaign for a 2% tax reduction on spirits, which currently makes up 80% of the price of a bottle of whisky.
Pringuet said: “I feel privileged to take over as chairman of the SWA and I’m committed to ensuring Scotch whisky retains its position as an iconic product around the world.
“With its great brands and committed people, as well as the support of governments at home and abroad, the Scotch whisky industry will go from strength to strength.”
Ian Curle will remain on the SWA’s governing council, while Peter Gordon, director at William Grant & Sons, will replace Pringuet as vice chairman of the SWA.
Meanwhile, Diageo CEO Ivan Menezes and Richard Burn, global policy and public affairs director of Diageo, have joined the SWA council.
Julie Hesketh-Laird, director of operational and technical affairs, has also been promoted to deputy chief executive, a role she will fulfil simultaneously.
Frost said the appointments strengthen the SWA’s ability to represent the industry effectively.
“This is an exciting time for the SWA and the entire Scotch whisky industry. The industry supports around 40,000 jobs across the UK and exports about £4 billion annually, but its success cannot be taken for granted.
“Economic headwinds and challenges, both domestically and in overseas markets, mean the work of the association on behalf of the industry is of vital importance.”
