More than a dozen people have been convicted for their part in supplying poisonous methanol-laced alcohol in Cuba

Last July, dozens of people in Cuba were admitted to emergency rooms with symptoms of severe poisoning.

This week, two guards at the University of Havana’s institute of pharmacy and foods were found guilty of stealing about 60 litres of methyl alcohol.

They were sentenced to 27 and 30 years in prison for theft, negligent homicide and causing grave injury, the Guardian reports.

One other guard was sentenced to six years for playing a lesser part in the theft, while all three were ordered to pay compensation to the victims and their families.

A number of other people received prison terms ranging from a few months to five years for receiving stolen goods and attempting to conceal a crime.

Additionally, the institute’s dean and other officials were dismissed from their posts.
