Vintage rockers

Not everything ages well

Live fast die young…hope I die before I get old…hey, hey, my, my, rock and roll will never die. Some of you may know that I like my heavy rock music, but I turned 50 recently and while the days of whisky, whiskey and wild wild women aren’t totally behind me (hey, two out of three ain’t bad, as my mate Meat put it) every month another issue of Classic Rock drops on the floor with another picture of a craggy-faced, bald, pot bellied former rock legend from my youth. Inside the mag there’ll be an interview about how said former rock star is now living on a health farm and eating tofu. But what has the world come to when our rock stars turn their back on Jack and Jim, and launch their own range of ….wine. I nearly fell off my zimmer frame. Where once we spoke of Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar launching a range of tequila, we now have David Coverdale, aged 60. teaming up with Dennis de la Montanya to launch a Zinfandel. “It’s a bodacious, cheeky little wine, filled to the brim with the spicy essence of sexy, slippery Snakeyness,” says Mr Coverdale. “I recommend it to complement any all grown up friskiness hot tub jollies. Is This Love?… I believe it is…” And it’s not just Whitesnake who are growing up ungraciously. I think Lemmy of Motorhead might have his own range of wine, too. Mind you, he’s not giving up his debauched past, claiming he pretty much drinks anything. But even he’s showing signs of settling down. His latest tipple is …Bailey’s, albeit with vodka. “It’s like a huge chocolate milkshake” he told Classic Rock Magazine. “You think Bailey’s is a ladies’ drink do you? Listen man, anything that is alcoholic and gives you the taste of chocolate can be anybody’s drink.” So while Lemmy and Whitesnake are at least glancing at the slippers and pipe, it’s left to Status Quo’s Francis Rossi to strut like a rocker. He has his own whisky brand, called Glen Rossi…
