Archie Rose creates its smokiest whisky
By Rupert HohwielerAustralian distillery Archie Rose will release a triple-smoked single malt whisky that uses native stringybark timber to impart its character.

The Sydney-based distillery’s previous experiments have included whiskies aged in barrels smoked with cinnamon and wattleseed.
For its latest smoked launch, Archie Rose has used native stringybark timber to create a bold and smoky profile that is ‘distinctly and unmistakably Australian’. The timber is said to create a profile that captures the Australian landscape, with flavours of bonfire embers, smoked charcuterie, rich oak, roasted macadamia and charred lemon.
The approach incorporates three layers of smoking: smoked malt, smoked casks and smoked water.
Master distiller Dave Withers explained: “Rather than following the well-worn path of traditional Scottish whisky, where smoke only touches the grain, Triple Smoked Single Malt embraces the unique character of this land through native Australian stringybark smoked malt, smoked casks and smoked water.”
The distillery is positioning the product, which sits at 46% ABV, as ‘Australia’s smokiest whisky’.
Archie Rose Triple Smoked will be available on 27 July from the distillery’s website and its cellar door in Rosebery. It retails for AU$139.99 (US$95) with 10,571 bottles available.
The distillery will celebrate the release with its first whisky event, titled Archie Rose Presents Triple Smoked and held at the Cell Block Theatre at National Art School in Sydney on 17 July. As well as samples of the new whisky, the night will feature live and interactive food stations centred around cooking over charcoal, flame and smoke.
Barbecue catering firm Carolina Smoke has created dishes to pair with Archie Rose’s whisky lineup.
The programme also includes smoke-inspired cocktails and live entertainment.
Archie Rose’s founder, Will Edwards, added: “Triple Smoked Whisky marks a milestone in our evolution of Australian whisky-making. We’re excited to be celebrating the release with this inaugural annual whisky event, where guests can step into the Archie Rose world and experience whisky smoked the Australian way.
“Triple Smoked Whisky is the culmination of over a decade of smoke experimentation, and we can’t wait to see it come to life through this experience.”
In February, Archie Rose also released its first age-statement whisky with a six-year-old single malt.
The distillery’s spirits range also includes rum, vodka and gin. In the past year, Archie Rose has created two experimental gins: one to mark International Women’s Day and a collaboration with seafood restaurant Saint Peter, which was distilled with the carcasses of John Dory fish.
The Archie Rose x Saint Peter Gin placed 20th in our countdown of the 50 most innovative spirits launches of 2025.
