Founded by the husband-and-wife team of Max and Claire Vaughan, White Peak became Derbyshire’s first full-scale craft distillery when it was established in 2016 at the former Johnson & Nephew Wire Works in Ambergate, along the River Derwen.

The 10th anniversary release, Wire Works Caduro X, is said to reflect a decade of Derbyshire craftsmanship and ‘dedication to flavour’.

It was inspired by a lightly peated Caduro expression from the Wire Works Provenance Core range, and is a blend of whiskies aged in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels and signature STR (shaved, toasted, and re-charred) ex-red wine casks.

The expression also includes both ‘regular cuts’ and ‘alt cuts’ of single malts, utilising different distillation cut points to enhance the spirit’s brighter, more tropical fruit-forward profile, while also subtly increasing the peat influence.

Bottled at the same ABV of 46.8% as the core expression, Caduro, the limited release is unique for its use of ‘special waters’.

This technique involves maturing low-strength spirits in oak casks to extract additional water-soluble flavours and textures.

Claire Vaughan said: “Over the past 10 years, we’ve taken a hands-on approach to learn more about how whisky develops its character – exploring every step from mashing and fermentation through distillation, maturation and vatting. Caduro X marks a milestone, but, more importantly, it is the evolution of these ideas.

“We are a small team of whisky enthusiasts, constantly exploring, testing and refining in pursuit of flavour. This mindset is at the heart of The Wire Works – a place with a more than 150-year history of making, where innovation and craft go hand in hand.”

The whisky’s aromas include banoffee pie, egg custard tarts, Murray mints, wine gums, baked apple, strawberry laces, orange zest, and a hint of peat.

On the palate, cinnamon rolls, pineapple cubes, milk chocolate, and yoghurt-coated cranberries are said to mingle with marmalade, nutmeg, gapple sours, and soft wood smoke.

Wire Works Caduro X is limited to 1,000 bottles with a recommended retail price of £75 (US$102).

It is now available at the distillery and on its website, as well as from select UK specialist retailers.

Commenting on reaching the 10-year mark, Vaughan added:  “What’s made the journey truly special, though, is the community around us. From the very beginning, we’ve been supported by an incredible group of people who’ve believed in what we’re building.

“We hope the next ten years continue in that same spirit – bringing people together, sharing what we make, and always striving to do it better.”
