Attaboy staff in New York win union vote
By Lauren BowesWorkers at New York cocktail bar Attaboy will be able to unionise after a successful vote.

Staff members launched a platform to rally for a union last month, under the name Attaboy Local 134. It included demands for self-management, transparency, better benefits, and protections.
The bar’s employees took part in a vote this week, with 13 voting for the creation of a union and eight against.
Hannah Chouinard, a representative of the group, said they have yet to get a response from the bar’s owners.
“We workers are looking forward to getting a contract soon, and we feel confident that, if the owners bargain in good faith, we can work something out that is great for everyone,” she said. “Workers want the bar to thrive while also supporting its working – doing what is best for the bar was the impetus for this whole project.”
Speaking to The Spirits Business in April, Attaboy bartender Chris Hughes said he sees the union as a “mechanism for holding bosses accountable”.
“We found that just trusting people to do the right thing doesn’t actually pan out,” he said. “This is one way to make sure we’re heard and our concerns are addressed.”
Attaboy opened in 2013 in the former location of Milk & Honey, founded by mixology legend Sasha Petraske.
