Rare breed: Bouvil Pure Cane Rhum

For the first time in 170 years, Bouvil Pure Cane Rhum is expanding beyond its Haitian roots and entering the global spirits market, in partnership with Origen X Group.

For decades, Haiti has remained one of the least industrialised yet most culturally rich rum-producing nations in the Caribbean. While other islands have developed export models and globalised their production, much of Haiti’s rum has remained hyper-local, crafted primarily for communities rather than for commercial expansion.

Bouvil was established in the 1850s, and has been continuously produced by the Vilbon family, making it one of the country’s oldest surviving rum houses. Until 2026, the family’s pure cane rum was not formally available in international markets. This absence was not because of a lack of quality but rather a reflection of the local realities.

Rum producers in Haiti face numerous challenges, including infrastructure constraints, political instability, limited export pathways, and the agricultural unpredictability of wild-grown cane. These factors make consistency and logistics exceptionally complex. Unlike large-scale molasses rum production seen elsewhere in the Caribbean, Bouvil is made from 100% indigenous Haitian cane juice, harvested from the Madame Meves fields and fermented with wild yeasts, without any industrial shortcuts, imported base materials, or homogenised profiles.

Bouvil is distilled using artisanal hybrid pot-and-column stills, preserving traditional character while ensuring stability for export. The brand’s production model is not chosen for efficiency; it is intentionally selected. From low-yield cane cultivation in Madame Meves to fermentation, distillation, and bottling in Port-au-Prince, Bouvil remains fully traceable, representing genuine provenance.

As interest in terroir-driven spirits grows, and bartenders increasingly prioritise authenticity over engineered products, Haitian rum occupies a distinct niche. Bouvil leans more towards agricole than molasses rum, yet maintains a unique style that is characteristic of Haiti. The use of wild cane, spontaneous fermentation, and small-scale distillation results in a vibrant, textural, and expressive flavour profile. At 42% ABV, Bouvil is aimed at the on-trade market: robust enough to maintain its structure in cocktails, yet balanced enough to enjoy on its own.

The rum performs particularly well in classic cocktails such as Daiquiris and Punches, where structure and aromatic lift are essential.

For bartenders and retailers looking for differentiation beyond mainstream Caribbean rum or established agricoles, Bouvil offers a unique point of discovery, both culturally and stylistically. Bouvil invites the trade to actively engage in the global conversation about Haitian rum.

Global ambitions

The global launch of Bouvil has been made possible through Origen X Group, whose long-term philosophy differs from the traditional short-term brand-building approach. Instead of modernising heritage brands, the group has focused on establishing the infrastructure and export capacity necessary to sustain authenticity without compromising it.

The debut of Bouvil Pure Cane Rhum is not a rebranding or reinvention; rather, it is a continuation supported by a robust global distribution network.

“Anyone familiar with Haiti understands the immense challenges involved in producing, exporting, and sustaining a truly authentic, historic Haitian rum on a global stage,” explains Zak Oganian, CEO of Origen X Group. “Every stage presents obstacles. And yet, Bouvil stands alone. It is a singular achievement.”

Bouvil Pure Cane Rhum is set to launch this spring in the UK, Italy, Belgium, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Georgia and Bulgaria, with a recommended retail price of £38 (US$51). This pricing positions it competitively in the premium white rum segment.

Following the initial launch, 10 additional international markets are expected to come online before the end of 2026. The brand also plans to release an Aged Cane Rhum expression this year or early 2027, expanding its range while adhering to its field-to-bottle production philosophy.
