Glasgow’s East End inspires cocktail menu

The Gate in Scotland’s Glasgow has created a drinks list celebrating the 200-year heritage of the city’s Gallowgate neighbourhood.

The venue has operated at 251 Gallowgate for seven years, however there has been a pub on the site for more than 200 years. Its first landlord, James Reid, took on the lease in 1826.

The new menu, titled Tales of The Gallowgate, is inspired by the ‘characters, culture and chaos’ that have shaped the pub’s surrounding streets.

The menu charts the very beginning of Gallowgate, including the story of the area’s name. The Paper Boy cocktail references Susan Newell, who was the last woman to be executed at Duke Street, for the murder of a local paper boy named John Johnston.

The cocktail features Brugal 1888 rum, yellow Chartreuse, Suze, lychee and dill.

Other cocktails include Toast to a Dug, an homage to the pub’s dog, Gordy, made with Eminente 7 rum, Discarded banana rum, coffee and caramel.

There is also a tribute to street performer Robert the Robot. The cocktail features Haku Vodka, Midori, manzanilla Sherry, pandan and pineapple brine to create a drink that’s ‘playful, slightly surreal and unexpectedly complex – much like the character himself’.

Andy Gemmell, owner of The Gate, said. “251 Gallowgate has been bringing people together for generations, and that means something to us. When we created this menu, it was important that it respected that history while still feeling unmistakably like The Gate.

“Our team here are incredibly creative. Every drink has been developed in-house, rooted in flavour and storytelling. We’ve built our cocktail experiences inspired by the street outside our door.

“I’ve fallen in love with this part of Glasgow. It has grit, humour and heart. I’m genuinely excited about its future, blending old-school character with a new-wave energy. We’re proud to be part of that evolution. We love pubs; we love this city, and if you leave feeling better than when you walked in, even better.”

Across the Atlantic, R&D cocktail bar also created a menu inspired by its hometown of Philadelphia.
